Family puts Asian spin on Mexican cuisine

Unassuming Hamtramck restaurant serves killer flavors with no borders

When Maria’s Comida opened in a Hamtramck storefront in 2008, it offered a menu of casual Mexican fare. Slammed by a local free publication for being “not very Mexican,” it managed to survive, and, in fact, thrive.

The family behind Maria’s — Al Pronko, his son Fred and daughter Marie — tightened their apron strings and forged ahead. After all, it wasn’t authenticity they were striving for, but a fresh, upbeat take on a popular cuisine.
